The six large panels depict the four evangelists, the proclaimers of the good news who are identified with the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—with Peter and Paul intermingled. Below them are depictions of well-known parables and, at bottom, four Old Testament prophets seen as prototypes of the four evangelists, along with two images of Old Testament stories.
