The Development Coordinator oversees the logistics and execution of events and activities managed by the Associate Director of Development and executed by the Development team. The Development Coordinator drives results through volunteer and committee empowerment.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Development and works closely with Development staff, the accounting office, donors, and Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights staff members to provide a high level of quality customer service to all internal and external constituents in a high-volume fundraising office.

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Development, the Development Coordinator will play an integral role in supporting the fundraising efforts of Chicago Lights. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Special Event Support – 50%

  • Assist in the execution of all organizational fundraising events including, but not limited to: Chicago Lights Gala of Hope, Spotlight, Cocktails for a Cause, and the Chicago Lights Marathon Team.
  • Oversee all aspects of the volunteer, silent auction, and wine committees for the Gala of Hope. Work with event contractor to oversee the load-in, event checkout/item pickup at the end of the event, and post-event load out.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of Cocktails for a Cause, a cocktail fundraiser hosted by the Chicago Lights Associates Board.
  • Serve as the staff liaison for the Chicago Lights Marathon Team. Team Chicago Lights is a diverse group of fitness enthusiasts coming together to participate in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on behalf of Chicago Lights. Team members commit to supporting Chicago Lights’ five outreach programs by training as a team, building community, and raising awareness and funds for the organization.
  • Provide support to the Chicago Lights Marathon Team: organize and lead monthly meetings and formulate weekly team updates, database management, event logistics, and team relations.
  • Assist in the execution of Spotlight, the organization’s annual luncheon of recognition and celebration.
  • Prepare event collateral as needed in partnership with the Communications Manager.
  • Provide support to third-party fundraising efforts.

Chicago Lights Associates Board 25%

  • Serve as a staff liaison to the Chicago Lights Associates Board, a group of young professionals that raises organizational awareness through special events, volunteer experiences, and fundraising activities.
  • Coordinate, attend, and participate in monthly full-Board meetings. Oversee the execution of all Associates Board initiatives.  
  • Assist Board in yearly planning efforts to foster strategic growth and retention.
  • Engage Associate Director of Development as needed to support Associates Board efforts.
  • Seek out and share opportunities to build relationships, collaborate with, and promote best practices from other area young professional Boards.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with Executive leadership to facilitate strategic, financial, and engagement analysis.
  • Develop strategies to recruit Board members and empower committee-driven initiatives.

Administrative Support – 25%

  • Provide project and administrative support to the Chicago Lights Executive Director as needed.
  • Schedule room reservations and set-up requests for regular and ad-hoc meetings, including arranging refreshments, catering, and audio-visual needs as required.
  • Prepare handouts or any other materials relevant to meetings.
  • Participate in the weekly money count. 
  • Assist with organizational mailings, including quarterly statements.
  • Support team during unusually heavy workloads and transactions related to the organization’s fiscal and calendar year-end gift processing and stewardship.
  • Serve as a resource to the Chicago Lights Board of Directors and Chicago Lights Resource Development Committee.


  • Be an active member of the Resource Development team.
  • Stay familiar with the programs of Chicago Lights and Fourth Presbyterian Church.
  • Other duties as assigned or needed.


  • 40 hours per week.
  • Some evening and weekend availability may be required (planned in advance)


  • Bachelor degree
  • 1-3 years of Development or related experience
  • Passionate about Chicago Lights’ mission and impact in the local community
  • Goal-oriented and ability to motivate and inspire results in others
  • Self-starter; ability to take initiative and experience finishing projects within budget and on time
  • Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team
  • Confident decision-maker with a proven ability to multitask, delegate, and empower
  • Friendly demeanor; ability to provide excellent customer service skills
  • Keen attention to detail with a strong commitment to accuracy, tracking, and follow through
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential information
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills; experience with committee work
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity managing multiple administrative tasks
  • Ability to be flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Comfort working in a multicultural, faith-based environment
