Serving as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Operational Ministries provides leadership, vision, and daily oversight to ensure that all operational functions deliver results and support and advance the plans and goals of Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago Lights, and other affiliates. This is a busy, demanding, and often rewarding position that requires energy, ingenuity, business sense, and empathy in working with multiple constituencies.

The successful candidate will display logistical skill, business acumen, and a desire to serve. Fourth Church is a Chicago “Top Workplace” three years running.



  • Develops plans and incorporates priorities and policies for operations based on the strategic vision and overall priorities of Fourth Church
  • Executes long-term vision and plans for operational and facility needs
  • Manages and increases the effectiveness and efficiency of support services through improvements to each function as well as coordination and communication between support and business functions
  • Works collaboratively with other members of Senior Leadership to fulfill the overall mission of Fourth Church
  • Drives initiatives within the management team and organization that contribute to long-term operational excellence and effectiveness


Provides managerial oversight and supervision for all managers, supervisors, and employees within the functional areas of

    • property/facilities management
    • security
    • information technology (IT)
    • data management and systems
    • human resources
    • reception
    • event planning
    • food services/catering


  • Develops and oversees the budget for all operational ministry departments
  • Coordinates clear communication among and between the operational ministry teams and those they serve, including other staff members, visitors, members, guests, and others
  • Develops, revises, and oversees operational policies, processes, and systems; information-flow systems; management reporting; and the use of predictive analytics to ensure compliance with established standards and regulations and to promote overall operational excellence
  • Represents Fourth Church in its relationships with major suppliers, contractors, government agencies, insurance companies, and others
  • Plays a significant role in churchwide long-term planning, including initiatives geared towards operational excellence
  • Ensures compliance with established standards and regulations

  • Solid supervisory experience and skills in leading employees through goal-setting, planning, and execution
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, emphasis in business management or related discipline
  • Eight-plus years of experience with systems and process development, management; operations and or facility management a plus
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing processes and systems
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating with others to set goals and achieve results
  • Budget management

  • Expert at focusing on both long-term issues and daily, practical issues; adept at effective priority-setting
  • Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to the values and mission of Fourth Church
  • Excellent communication skills; listens and considers options; decisive
