The Receptionist manages the main reception desk of Fourth Presbyterian Church and as such acts as a central information point. Often the first person with whom the public has contact at Fourth Church, the receptionist is responsible for cultivating relations and conducting all duties in the spirit of the church's continuing mission.


Approximately 12 to 20 hours per week. Requires availability for shifts (which may vary)

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Weekends 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Some holidays

Regular Sunday availability is required.


  • Welcome and greet with spirit and enthusiasm all guests of the church
  • Operate phones to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls; will include, but is not limited to—
    • Supplying to callers and visitors general information regarding programs, services, and other church-related matters
    • Communicating department needs with operations staff
  • Assist mailroom coordinator in logging and distribution of packages
  • Check in guests who have appointments or require emergency services with the Social Service Center
  • Be familiar with events happening on the campus each day
  • Maintain a tidy and pleasant looking reception area
  • Assist in sales of tickets for certain special events at the church
  • Assist security in maintaining a safe environment by reporting any suspicious activities or persons
  • Sign out temporary keys and fobs to staff and volunteers
  • Sign out and maintain AV equipment supplies for staff and volunteers
  • Assist with mailings and inserting weekly bulletins
  • Use the S.P.I.R.I.T. principles of hospitality when interacting with visitors, guests, members, and staff of Fourth Presbyterian Church
  • Other duties as assigned or as needed


  • Previous receptionist/front desk experience preferred
  • Outstanding communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and a Windows-operating environment
  • Previous experience using a multiline phone system
  • Comfortable using different forms of technology and terminology or the willingness to learn
  • Ability to maintain professionalism during difficult or stressful situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to successfully relate to diverse individuals
  • Ability to prioritize situations and tasks
  • Organizational skills
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality
  • Exceptional attendance record, including timeliness in reporting to work
  • Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply knowledge in new situations and exercise good judgment, especially during peak times
  • Comfort and willingness to work in a multicultural and faith-based environment
