   Exercise and Fitness Classes

A variety of exercise modes are offered at the Center in order to meet the interests of our members. Please feel free to try an exercise class before joining the Center to be certain it meets your requirements. Participants are encouraged to speak with the instructor about any special needs so exercises may be modified appropriately. All CLL exercise instructors are certified in their field.

Toning Balls

   Mondays
   10:30–11:15 a.m.

   Anne Pringle Burnell

This chair-based class will start with seated aerobics to increase stamina, then use lightweight toning balls for grip strength, shoulder mobility, and hand-eye coordination. Class winds up with seated abs, cool down, and stretching.

Anne Pringle Burnell created the Peyow™ Aqua Pilates program, and she developed the Stronger Seniors™ Workout Program for older adults and people with disabilities, injuries, or chronic conditions. Anne is certified by the American Council on Exercise, Aquatics Exercise Association, AquaStretch™ , Aerobics & Fitness Association of America, Nia Technique Black Belt, and Stott Pilates™ . Anne is a featured presenter at national and international conferences and faculty educator for ATRI, AEA, ACE, AFAA, AquaStretch™ and Stott Pilates™. Anne teaches at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Peninsula Chicago, University of Illinois Chicago, and Stott Pilates™ Certification courses.

Yoga

   Mondays
   2:30–3:30 p.m.

   Slone Isselhard

Yoga is an ancient mental, physical, and spiritual discipline that harmonizes the mind with the breath and the body. In this class we will explore a variety of yoga poses and breathing techniques designed to strengthen both upper and                 lower body, increase balance and flexibility, and improve mental clarity and focus.  Class will incorporate strength, stretching, breathing techniques, and meditation.  Class is open to all levels, including absolute beginners.

Slone Isselhard has been practicing yoga for twenty years, but practiced law for seven years before pursuing her love of teaching full-time. Slone is certified through Moksha Yoga Chicago's teacher training program (Yoga-Alliance-approved) and currently teaches at all three Moksha Yoga locations. Slone also teaches beach yoga, private lessons, and both public and private events throughout the city.

Pilates Resistance Bands

   Tuesdays
   10:30–11:15 a.m.

   Anne Pringle Burnell

This Pilates-based chair class focuses on core strength, posture and breathing, upper body conditioning and lower body mobility with the use of variable resistance bands

Anne Pringle Burnell developed the Peyow™ Aqua Pilates and Stronger Seniors™ Workout programs. Anne is an author, international presenter, and faculty educator for ATRI, AEA, ACE, AFAA, Arthritis Foundation, AquaStretch™ and Stott Pilates™.  Anne is certified by the American Council on Exercise, Aquatics Exercise Association, AquaStretch™ , Aerobics & Fitness Association of America, Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute, Ai Chi, Arthritis Foundation Program Leader Trainer, Gray Institute: Certified Applied Functional Science, and Stott Pilates™.  Anne teaches at Galter Life Center/Swedish Covenant Hospital, Peninsula Spa Chicago, and private clients at her Pilates studio.

Intermediate T’ai Chi

   Tuesdays and Thursdays
   2:45–3:30 p.m.

   Thursdays: Peter Kneip

This ancient form of meditative movement brings strength and balance benefits to its adherents. This intermediate class is for CLL members only and is not appropriate for beginners. Please click here for details about the beginners’ series that will be offered this fall.

Hau Kum Kneip studied with Chinese T’ai Chi masters in Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, and Hawaii beginning in 1978. She has taught T’ai Chi Chuan at the CLL since 1995, increasing balance, strength, and focus in her students.

Peter Kneip has studied T’ai Chi with masters in New York, Chicago, China, and Hawaii. He also studied Chinese calligraphy and brush painting with a master from 1964 to 1980.

Zing! Total Fitness

   Wednesdays
   10:30–11:15 a.m.

   Pam Peterson

This aerobic class, led by Pam Peterson, includes fun movement to upbeat songs, all while increasing strength, flexibility, and endurance! Pam is a big believer in creating balanced and inspired fitness programs.

Pam Peterson, founder of Zing! Fitness, is a dynamic teacher who believes that fitness should be fun. A certified fitness professional for thirty years, Pam has helped countless students become stronger, leaner, more balanced, and more energetic. Her lively Zing! routines are easy to follow and geared toward older adults, with catchy tunes every baby boomer will love! Pam is also an award-winning singer, writer, and comic actress known for her YouTube hit “Memory” with more than 6.5 million views.

   David Aaron Harbin

This class is an enjoyable challenge of chair and standing group exercise, which emphasizes core strength, balance, flexibility, and mental fitness.

David Aaron Harbin brings enthusiasm and energy into every class session, along with tips for a healthier lifestyle. His interest in older adult health began with his own family and has expanded across other Chicago-area communities. David is certified in senior fitness through the American Institute of Fitness Educators as well as Stronger Seniors Specialty Training & Silver Sneakers.
