God is doing a new thing with the Jazz at Four worship community!
Beginning on December 2, the first Sunday of Advent, the Jazz at Four worship service will find a new home in Buchanan Chapel. Read on to learn how we came to this decision.
Our 4:00 p.m. Worship Leadership Team, in conversation with members of our worshiping community, has been engaged in a three-month season of discovery to evaluate and discern how we might renew our Jazz at Four worship service. Listening to one another and for the Holy Spirit, this is what we have learned:
Music is the lifeblood of our worship together. Each week, we worship with a poetic pattern of word and song. Jazz, along with its musical cousins Soul and Blues, is the primary art form through which we praise God in our worship at the 4:00 p.m. service.
The heart of worship for our community is the Communion Table. Each week, we feast at Christ's table and find our hearts fed for the week ahead. In sharing the bread and cup together, many of us find meaning and a deeper sense of belonging.
There is a hunger for even more creativity and community. The Jazz at Four worship service has long been a laboratory for how Christians gather to worship God in the twenty-first century. This creativity and flexibility has shed new light on ancient traditions and kept us open to God's reforming spirit. Through our prayers and conversation, we believe that God is calling us to explore more ways to deepen our relationships with one another and with God.
The move to Buchanan Chapel as we begin a new liturgical year on December 2 will help us to live more deeply into these renewed and long-standing commitments. Buchanan Chapel will allow us to gather in ways that will strengthen the feeling of community, imaginatively employ visual and musical arts, deepen forms of prayer, and demonstrate the power of the Communion table to help us experience God's powerful welcome.
"God is doing a new thing with us--and I can't wait," Pastor Shannon Kershner has said of this new opportunity for Jazz at Four. "This move and focus will deepen our common worship life, bringing intention and energy to God's call and claim on our life together!" We echo Shannon's sentiment!
We also invite you to please mark Sunday, November 4 at 3:00 p.m. on your calendar. That is when we will meet in Buchanan Chapel for an information session to share more detail about this move and the possibilities it will give us for faithful worship and deep fellowship at Fourth Church. We hope you can join us for more conversation then.
