Today’s Reading | Psalm 148

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
     praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels;
     praise him, all his host!

Praise him, sun and moon;
     praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,
     and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
     for he commanded and they were created.
He established them forever and ever;
     he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
     you sea monsters and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and frost,
     stormy wind fulfilling his command!

Mountains and all hills,
     fruit trees and all cedars!
Wild animals and all cattle,
     creeping things and flying birds!

Kings of the earth and all peoples,
     princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and women alike,
     old and young together!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
     for his name alone is exalted;
     his glory is above earth and heaven.
He has raised up a horn for his people,
     praise for all his faithful,
     for the people of Israel who are close to him.
Praise the Lord! (NRSV)

Psalm 148 is completely focused on praising the Lord, evidenced by the word “praise” appearing thirteen times in only fourteen verses. And why shouldn’t we praise him?

One of the best parts of Psalm 148 is that the writer of the psalm doesn’t stop at telling people to praise the Lord but wants everyone and everything to commend God. The psalmist starts with the heavens, moves to the sun, moon, and stars, and then follows to nature on earth, ranging from sea creatures to mountains to snow. All should praise the Lord!

Right before Christmas, my boyfriend of two and a half years proposed to me—a nice, low-key, romantic proposal at home, using a book he had put together with pictures of us. In the post-proposal craziness, after I said “yes!” and as I quickly picked up the phone to call my parents, I realized that I had forgotten to thank the Lord for all he had given me, including this amazing person who wants to spend the rest of his life with me. I quickly shut my eyes and honored God with words of praise.

I know sometimes we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our crazy lives and forget to praise God. I would like to think that God understands and waits patiently for the light bulb to go off, after which I will close my eyes and graciously thank the Lord for my life.

I’m going to start making it a point to praise the Lord more often, because we sure have many things for which to be thankful.

Lord, I praise you for the many blessings in my life. Help me to slow down once in a while and thank you for all you have given me. Praise the Lord! Amen.
