Today's Scripture
Hebrews 12:1–3
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. (NRSV)
Reflection
I’ll never run a marathon, but I enjoy the news reports that lead up to Marathon Sunday. I like to see the runners interviewed and talk about their families, their running groups, and their work to stay focused and keep training. I even like to watch them chow down on pasta and carbs in River North on Saturday night. And then on Marathon Sunday, that huge mass of runners takes off from Grant Park! Along the route, they are encouraged by their friends, their families, other runners, and even complete strangers.
That’s a pretty terrific “cloud of witnesses.” Now, think of the witnesses that have helped you in your faith marathon, and who are helping you right now. Friends and pastors today, parents and teachers in your past. Inspiring you. Protecting you. Encouraging you. They’ve been there. They know it’s tough. And they know you can’t do it alone.
And out in front is Jesus. A pioneer, a groundbreaker, a lead runner. Someone who shows us the gift at the end is worth any struggle. It gives me great comfort to remember everyone who has my back.
Prayer
Creator of all that is, you know my heart best of all. When it falters, when I stumble, remind me of the people who have inspired me to live in your way so that I can keep going. Amen.
