On the Installation
of Camille Cook Howe
as
Pastor of Fourth Church
A Reflection by Linda Loving
Former Associate Pastor at Fourth Church and Mentor to Camille Cook Howe
“My prayers and heart and hope are with everyone gathered for this joyful occasion.
Years ago when Camille was a student at Vanderbilt and a member of the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, she asked if she could ‘shadow me’ one summer since she was contemplating attending seminary. I agreed but warned her that this behind-the -scenes glimpse of ministry in a large congregation might inspire a switch to quantum physics!
Camille was especially interested in our conversations about preaching. It wasn’t until the end of my parish ministry that I finally discovered a metaphor that captures the mystery and art of preaching. I believe it offers a ‘charge’ to both those in pulpit and those in pews. Preaching never gets easier, nor does discipleship. Especially not in our critical, chaotic, confusing times.
This blessing I wish to offer comes not from a Calvinist theologian but from the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz, who wrote, ‘I am a hole in the flute that the Christ’s breath moves through; listen to this music.’
Camille, each time you sit down to write a sermon or lead a session meeting, may you remember this wisdom.
And for the members and friends of Fourth Church, listen to this music. And remember you too are ‘a hole in the flute that Christ’s breath moves through.’ Each one.
All of you together, by God’s grace, breathing love and justice and courage into the ministry of Fourth Presbyterian Church. God be with you.”
