Mannerism, the name generally given to the art of 16th-century Italy, is characterized by self-conscious displays of technical virtuosity, hyper-refined gracefulness, and a competitiveness in creativity that led to the creation of some of the most haunting, even downright bizarre, images in the history of art.

Jeff Nigro will explore the emotive as well as stylistic interpretations of Mannerist art, focusing on such artists as Pontormo, Parmigianino, Bronzino, and Arcimboldo.

Jeff Nigro is a research associate in the Arts of the Ancient Mediterranean and Byzantium at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is also an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Learning and Public Engagement. He has had a professional relationship with the Art Institute for over 30 years, including serving as director of adult programs in the Department of Museum Education from 2003 to 2010.

Jeff has acted as study leader on museum-sponsored trips to Italy, Greece, and Germany and received the Chairman’s Award for outstanding service. Jeff is a frequent speaker for the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA), where he is the former regional coordinator of the Greater Chicago region of JASNA.
