Today’s Scripture Reading | John 1:6–9
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. (NRSV)
Reflection
We have all heard the demand, “Prove it.” We seek such reassurance, such affirmation of the facts, such relief for our need to control what swirls around us. It sneaks up on us in funny ways: sometimes, when I have made a presentation at an address unknown to me, I will drive to the site the day before just so I could be sure I can find it. It’s as if I don’t trust the directions provided to get me there. I feel the need for my MapQuest directions, my flashlights, my road tests.
Then I think of John and this passage: John, the messenger, the intrepid witness, who came to alert, to remind us that Christ came to embrace us with Light, with more-than sufficient Grace and Love to navigate this often-confusing road of life.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for your compelling presence, especially in moments of confusion. Most of all, open me to your directions, your signals to my heart and spirit, so that I may reach out to others and move confidently even when holding hands with ambiguity. May your light be a gift to this day. Amen.
