Today’s Scripture Reading
Isaiah 35:1–10
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.”
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (NRSV)
Reflection
Often with the daily Bible readings, I home in on a single phrase or a particular aspect of the passage for reflection, but something about today’s text suggests go ahead and take it all in ... more is more!
Imagine receiving a beautifully decorated, hand-pressed invitation to a holiday celebration. You are a special guest. Upon entry, you are struck by the radiant light, warmth, and welcome. The halls are decked lushly and pleasantly fragrant with seasonal greens and flowers everywhere you look. There’s a resplendent buffet set with all of your favorites, splendidly presented and the aromas are mouth-watering. Family, friends, colleagues, and community are all present. There’s laughter and cheer and lots of great conversation. It’s so festive! The music and dancing last well into the evening, and the amazingly gracious host even ensures that all the happy revelers have safe passage home.
What if God hosted just such a party at Christmas? Today’s passage is at once imagery, poetry, and metaphor. It is so extravagant that it is pretty incomprehensible. That’s God and the prophets for you!
Sometimes it helps me grasp what I read when I can envision it viscerally and in detail. An invitation into communion with God and Christ is more than a glass-half-full perspective and fertile promise. Out of the wilderness, we are welcomed into God’s celebration of light, love, and amazing grace.
Prayer
Gracious God, you extend an open invitation, welcoming and encouraging all to take part. In this season of Advent, I contemplate that you offer life, love, and belonging in the gift of yourself. You are both here and coming, incomprehensible and accessible. Help me receive the gifts and walk the path you offer through your amazing and transforming grace. Amen.
