Today’s Scripture Reading
Luke 1:67–75
Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.” (NRSV)
Reflection
I always get goosebumps and misty-eyed when reading Zechariah’s prophecy. Here is a person who at one point believed he would never wear the title of “father” rejoicing in the name of the Lord. He uses this time of utter rapture to foretell all that is to come. I can’t help but think of the first time I held my best friend’s son. I remember whispering to this person, affirming all the great things he would do now that he was in this world and thanking the Almighty for this fragile life. My best friend’s son reminded me of the gift that is given when life is put at the center. For what felt like the briefest moment I sensed salvation in my arms. In retrospect, I wonder if this feeling was how Zechariah felt when he foretold what was to come thanks to this little life.
Prayer
Lord, you are the creator of all things. Let your Spirit descend upon us and fill us with joy so bountiful we praise your name. Amen.
