Today’s Scripture Reading
Psalm 138
I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything.
On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.
All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth.
They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord.
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me.
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. (NRSV)
Reflection
You are the work of God’s hands, and God has a purpose for your life. These are assurances that you are never alone and that there is a way for you to go. There is a path, a purpose for you.
Though you may feel lost at times, though you may wonder “why” about different aspects of your life, God has been with you since God shaped and molded you before your birth. God has never left you, and God will never drop you. As Jesus said, “I will not leave you orphaned.”
When you pray, allow yourself to take this in. Imagine with your mind’s eye, or sense with your inner senses, the nearness of God to you. You may feel that presence as warmth or relaxation or a strong yet tender hug.
In that state, recall the things that have given you the most joy and gratitude. Dwell on that feeling of gratitude and any other feelings that may come up.
Prayer
Generous God of Love, I thank you for my life. I thank you for the thousands of moments you have given me, including this one. Thank you. Amen.
