Today’s Scripture Reading
Joel 1:29–34

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.” (NRSV)

Reflection

In our Sunday School classes at Fourth Church, we watch a short video called “Holy Moly,” which is a hit for all ages. One of my favorites is one about John the Baptist. During this video, John and Jesus argue back and forth about who should baptize whom, and then God’s big hand comes down from the sky and solves the situation.

Our baptisms are significant in our lives. I have the honor to work with families to plan this moment. I remember mine vividly, as I was around fourteen years of age. During this season of Lent, how do we live out our baptismal promises? How do we show the love of Jesus to our friends, family, and neighbors?

Times are still tough right now. We are dealing with plenty of stressors—work, school, illness. Despite the things that trouble us, Jesus is there with us, teaching us to love and care for all people that we encounter.

Prayer
Gracious and loving God, help me to care for anyone that I meet. Remind me of my baptism and the grace that you have provided for me. Amen.
