Scripture Reading
Hebrews 12:1–3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. (NRSV)

Reflection

A search of Google Images for the most recognized portion of today’s scripture — “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us” — presents one with lots of photos of sneaker-clad feet, racers on a starting line, racers being cheered on by sign-waving fans, and lone runners, mid-stride, training for a race. While the author of Hebrews wasn’t actually writing about running a long-distance race, it serves as a good analogy for leading a fulfilling Christian life.

Runners must look up and focus forward to prevent stumbling or slowing down. Likewise, Christians must look upward and remain focused on Christ. If our focus is on our worldly life, distracted by the latest news notification that pops up on our phone, the current scoop on upcoming elections, or consumed by work and financial demands, we are distracted from our true purpose to serve God.

Runners, clad in feather-light clothes, carry almost nothing as they run to avoid feeling weighed down in a race. As Christians we must recognize what is weighing us down in life and let it go. If we are worried about what others do or don’t do for us or we are troubled by our own to-do list of musts and shoulds, we cannot persevere. To run with perseverance means maintaining our steadfast faith in spite of our worries and troubles. To persevere, we must give our burdens over to God in prayer.

Most runners don’t train for months and enter a race just to receive a medal and photo op at the finish line. Most run a race for the joyful feeling of accomplishment that comes when the race is completed. Similarly Christians must look forward with joy to God’s promise to each of us, the gift of everlasting life. When we do, we will truly be able to run with perseverance the race set before us.

Prayer
God of enduring faith, thank you for the gift of perseverance. Lord, help me to maintain focus on what is truly important, help me to keep my eyes on Christ. Amen.
