Today's Hymn
“What Wondrous Love Is This”

To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing,
to God and to the Lamb, I will sing;
to God and to the Lamb who is the great I am,
while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
while millions join the theme, I will sing!

American folk hymn
Hymn 215, Glory to God
verse 3

Reflection

The haunting, reverberating tune of this hymn is exactly the kind of lament the season of Lent brings upon us. A longing and a hope to believe in a God that is good. And tame.

In this verse of “What Wondrous Love Is This” our voices join to share in the glory of God as well as the peacefulness and tameness of God.

This results in a mighty swelling of millions who join the theme. This feeling of being a part of the crowd while also standing out in song is the power of singing together in church and anywhere. Each of us holding our individual part that upholds the whole, the song.

During this song, we traverse from wondrous love, to sinking down, to glorifying the God and Lamb, to dying, to being free from death. Although the Lamb is the comfort, death still has to occur in order for there to be a resurrection.

In our Lenten season let death be a reminder of life, a reminder of hope and for the promise of our souls being free.

Prayer
Dear Lord and Lamb, thank you for taking watch over us as we marvel in your wondrous love, the sinking down, the giving up the crown, the dying down, and most especially the rising up and being free. As we contemplate this pilgrimage into our own souls, be there with us as we come to realize our soul is where we are one with you and the Lamb. Connect us back to ourselves. Connect us back to you. In your name we pray, Amen.
