Today's Hymn
“Lord Jesus, Think on Me”
Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin.
From earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within.
Lord Jesus, think on me, amid the battle’s strife.
In all my pain and misery be thou my health and strife.
by Synesius of Cyrene
Hymn 417, Glory to God
verse 1–2
Reflection
“Lord Jesus, Think on Me,” is one of the oldest hymns in our hymnal. Its Greek version dates from the beginning of the fifth century, and our stanzas are now from the nineteenth century, paraphrased, and made accessible to us through this very old tune. Its simplicity and directness pair well with the music. I was unfamiliar with it until writing this devotion. I’m grateful that it made it into our Glory to God hymnal, which had an amazing team working on it for many years.
I feel that this hymn is relatable to many of us. We have our troubles, our rough times, tough things we want to get away from but can’t seem to let go of them. Loss of loved ones, struggles at home, frustrations with kids, family, coworkers, and our own sins. This hymn reminds us that Jesus is with us on this journey. We want the strength of Jesus during these times; we need his strength and healing during these times.
I know we have just celebrated Easter, and that we’ve brought back the alleluias and music is more joyous in worship. But we still have plenty that weighs on us. We still have plenty of struggles. This is our time to call on Jesus to support us during tough times. He will give us strength and guidance and be with us through rough times.
Prayer
Loving Jesus, we all go through hard times. Please be a source of healing; give us strength and comfort as we face our difficulties. We rely on you and know that you will be there for us, and we thank you for that. Amen.
