Today's Scripture
Colossians 3:12–17

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (NRSV)

Nearly every day, we hear of someone who is going through difficult times, entire communities in mourning, random accidents and acts of violence occurring, and we find ourselves asking, “Why? What? and How?” Why is this happening? What are we to do, and how are we to make a difference? From the rage of an angry mob to the tenderness of a child’s broken heart, God hears us and is with us.

In this New Testament passage, God helps us navigate answers to these questions. He reminds us to remember who we are, God’s chosen people, holy and beloved. As such, God has tasked us to “clothe ourselves” and “put on” Christ-like qualities such as patience, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, humility, and love, with love being the strand that harmoniously binds these “garments” of virtue.

The Bible tells us that in this world we will have trouble (John 16:13). God does his part of comforting, guiding, and equipping us, but will we do our part by keeping our hearts open and remembering to show up “dressed” in our best Christian clothes?

Prayer

Lord, thank you that we are not alone. Even in this world of billions of people, there are times when sadness, anger, and grief grab hold of us, and we feel lost and oftentimes alone. We are grateful that in those moments you are with us and have given us what we need for ourselves and to be there for our neighbors. Help us to remember to continually remain clothed in your righteousness. We praise you and give you the glory. Amen.
