Prayers of the People

Sunday, May 12, 2013
Offered by Victoria G. Curtiss, Associate Pastor

Creator God, on this day we celebrate loving mothers. We thank you, God, that you love us, as the scriptures say, like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, and like a hen who gathers her brood under the shelter of her wings. For those of us whose mothers gave their lives selflessly on our behalf, who believed in us and nurtured us, we thank you. For those whose mothers did not love in these ways, we ask for your healing. For the great joy and privilege of being a parent, cherishing children, we praise you. For those who wish they could have been parents or who have lost children, we ask for your comfort. For all who seek to foster life in others, we ask for your guidance and strength.

We pray for all who live in bondage of one form or another. We praise you for the release of the women held captive in Cleveland for so many years, and we pray for the release of others suffering the same plight. We pray for recovery for those addicted to substance destructive patterns. We lift up to you those who feel trapped in unfulfilling work or frantic activity. We seek your liberation for all whose desire for more money or success robs them of true life.

We also pray for those who are ill, facing or recovering from surgery, or in grief over the death of a loved one. Surround them with your healing strength and comfort.

All this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray together: Our Father . . .
