A variety of exercise modes are offered at the Center in order to meet the interests of our members. Please feel free to try an exercise class before joining the Center to be certain it meets your requirements. Participants are encouraged to speak with the instructor about any special needs so exercises may be modified appropriately. All CLL exercise instructors are certified in their field.

This chair-based class will start with seated aerobics to increase stamina, then use lightweight toning balls or resistance bands (or household items that can be used as substitutes) for grip strength, shoulder mobility, and hand-eye coordination. Class winds up with seated abs, cool down, and stretching.

Anne Pringle Burnell created the Peyow™ Aqua Pilates program, and she developed the Stronger Seniors™ Workout Program for older adults and people with disabilities, injuries, or chronic conditions. In 2018, she won the Tsunami Spirit Award for innovation in Aquatic Therapy, and has been a featured presenter at international conferences authoring several articles and manuals. She is certified and an education provider for AEA, AF, AFAA/NASM, ACE, ATRI, AquaStretch, and a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer. Anne is also a professional singer in Chicago.

Continuing Tap Dance

Bring in the Noise!! This class assumes that you are proficient in the basic elements of tap and are ready to learn more complex steps such as time steps, maxi ford, etc. Our warm up will gradually move away from the barre as the tempo of the class increases and we learn full length dances. Before you know it, we will be shuffling off to Buffalo!

Susan Fay has a M.A. in dance education from Northwestern University and is a certified Silver Sneakers instructor. She is also a professional actor, having worked with theaters such as Lookingglass Theatre Company, the Court Theatre, Harftord Stage Company, Montana Shakespeare Theater, and many more.

 

Yoga

Yoga is an ancient mental, physical, and spiritual discipline that harmonizes the mind with the breath and the body. In this class we will explore a variety of yoga poses and breathing techniques designed to strengthen both upper and                 lower body, increase balance and flexibility, and improve mental clarity and focus.  Class will incorporate strength, stretching, breathing techniques, and meditation.  Class is open to all levels, including absolute beginners.

Melissa Renzi, LSW, MSW, CYT-200 is a Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher and Licensed Social Worker. She received her 200-hour yoga certification from      Moksha Yoga Center in Chicago in 2015. Yoga has been part of her life since 1998 when her mom first took her to an ashram where she was introduced to Kriya   Yoga.

This ancient form of meditative movement brings strength and balance benefits to its adherents. This intermediate class is for CLL members only and is not appropriate for beginners. Please click here for details about the beginners’ series that will be offered this fall.

Hau Kum Kneip studied with Chinese T’ai Chi masters in Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, and Hawaii beginning in 1978. She has taught T’ai Chi Chuan at the CLL since 1995, increasing balance, strength, and focus in her students.

Peter Kneip has studied T’ai Chi with masters in New York, Chicago, China, and Hawaii. He also studied Chinese calligraphy and brush painting with a master from 1964 to 1980.

Zing! Total Fitness

This aerobic class, led by Pam Peterson, includes fun movement to upbeat songs, all while increasing strength, flexibility, and endurance! Pam is a big believer in creating balanced and inspired fitness programs.

Pam Peterson, founder of Zing! Fitness, is a dynamic teacher who believes that fitness should be fun. A certified fitness professional for thirty years, Pam has helped countless students become stronger, leaner, more balanced, and more energetic. Her lively Zing! routines are easy to follow and geared toward older adults, with catchy tunes every baby boomer will love! Pam is also an award-winning singer, writer, and comic actress known for her YouTube hit “Memory” with more than 6.5 million views.

This class is an enjoyable challenge of chair and standing group exercise, which emphasizes core strength, balance, flexibility, and mental fitness.

David Aaron Harbin brings enthusiasm and energy into every class session, along with tips for a healthier lifestyle. His interest in older adult health began with his own family and has expanded across other Chicago-area communities. David is certified in senior fitness through the American Institute of Fitness Educators as well as Stronger Seniors Specialty Training & Silver Sneakers.

Basic Tap Dance

If you can walk, you can take this class! Unleash your inner Shirley Temple, have fun, and work those feet and ankles in this basic tap class. Our tap class will review the fundamental steps of tap. We’ll start with taps, heel drops and flaps and progress to simple combination steps and longer phrases. The class will gradually develop our balance, agility and cognitive skills

*This class requires previous experience and skill level. If your experience is outside the CLL, a conversation with the instructor prior to registration will be scheduled.
